What is CERT?

CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team and is made up of volunteer citizens from your local community who are trained to assist emergency responders in the event of a disaster. The program originated out of Los Angeles in the 1980s and has spread nationwide since adopted and standardized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). What does CERT do?

The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. Best of all the cost to you is nothing but time.

What can CERT do for you?

The WCSO CERT ACADEMY will give you the tools and skills you need to participate so you can help your community recover from a local disaster. Each and every citizen has a skill that can be valuable to your community. Learning how to use your skills to become valuable to your community is what WCSO CERT ACADEMY teaches you. You will learn how to protect yourself, your family and community in an emergency.

                                                   Get involved

To become a CERT team member, you must complete a 26-hour, instructor-led Basic Training Academy. Classes are held four times per year. The cost is free, and students must be at least 18 years old. If you are a high school student, you can attend with a parent or guardian.
